Spotlight On: Arnica

May 05, 2021

Ok, so we’ve been profiling a lot of our favourite skincare products and ingredients lately, but there’s one more that truly deserves all the hype in the world, and it goes by the name of arnica.

Arnica is a bright yellow flower that looks a little bit like a daisy (it’s nickname is even mountain daisy). Another name for it is wolf’s bane, but unfortunately it won’t help you fight off werewolves (that we know of). Once transformed into an essential oil or extract, Arnica is a super powerful skincare ingredient. For this reason, it’s also quite a popular one. In fact, chances are it’s already in some of the skincare products you own. That said, you may not realize how magical the ingredient truly is, and that’s what why we're here today.

Why Arnica is #1

It fights acne:Arnica contains both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which together help combat everything from small whiteheads to more serious breakouts.

It reduces redness and puffiness:Arnica’s powerful anti-inflammatory properties help to soothe and calm skin, which works wonders for people with acne, ingrown hairs, or other skin conditions like eczema.

It’s a natural dandruff remedy: Once again, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties in Arnica work together to become a powerful force for dandruff to be reckoned with (arnica is great at fighting scalp irritation and combating malassezia, a fungus that triggers dandruff).

It speeds up healing:Arnica is known to speed up the healing of all types of wounds, from bruises to bug bites. It does this by stimulating the flow of white blood cells and improving blood flow in the affected area.

It decreases pain:You may want to consider swapping that A535 for some arnica, because this natural ingredient offers serious pain relief. By now, you can probably guess that Arnica’s ability to decrease pain is due to its strong anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can not only reduce redness and swelling but also improve blood circulation which is known to reduce pain, especially relating to sore joints and muscles. (Note that Arnica should not be applied to open wounds.)

How To Use It

Now that you’re dying to add Arnica to your skincare routine (we feel you), we’re going to show you a few of our key products you can find the ingredient in. Generally speaking, Arnica is a popular addition to cleansers, body oils, serums, face masks and eye creams. Take South’s AHA/PHA Ingrown Serum as an example. Arnica is a key ingredient in our serum because it works to calm the skin and speed up healing, which is ideal if you’re dealing with ingrown hairs. You’ll also find it in our the pH Balanced Intimate Skin Cleanser for similar reasons (it’s anti-inflammatory properties are literally everything).

In conclusion, Arnica deserves to be front and centre in your skincare routine. So stop sleeping on it and we promise, your skin will thank you for it.
